The custom production manufacturer of automotive leaf springs bears various stresses during the vehicle's operation, primarily repetitive bending stress, with the majority resulting in fatigue failure. Therefore, the spring steel is required to have a high elastic limit and good resistance to elastic relaxation, as well as a high yield-to-tensile strength ratio. To prevent fatigue and fracture under alternating stress, the spring should possess high fatigue strength and corrosion resistance. Automotive leaf springs are generally made of high-strength, good-plasticity important components, and after nitriding treatment, they are used to manufacture important parts with special performance requirements, such as shafts, gears, and fasteners. After low-temperature tempering or isothermal tempering, they can be used as ultra-high-strength steel.

In the custom production of automotive leaf springs, the combined effect of silicon and manganese elements improves the hardenability of the steel. Silicon also effectively enhances tempering stability, while manganese increases wear resistance. However, silicon promotes decarburization tendencies, and manganese increases the sensitivity of the steel to overheating. Nevertheless, when both are added in combination, the decarburization and overheating sensitivity of silicon-manganese steel are lower than that of silicon steel and manganese steel. However, quenching cracks may still occur due to overheating sensitivity, and decarburization significantly affects the wear resistance and fatigue strength of the workpiece.

To improve the strength and fatigue life of the springs, shot peening treatment should be applied to the heat-treated leaf springs. The fatigue life of shot-peened springs can generally reach 5 to 10 times that of unshot-peened springs. Therefore, the leaf springs of vehicles operated cautiously by drivers have a much longer service life than those of vehicles driven under harsh road conditions, severely overloaded, or driven roughly.
